Busting Sunscreen Myths - The Truth about SPF sunscreen

The understanding of SPF’s importance in our everyday life is not as great as it should be. A majority of people will only use sunscreen when being on a beach for sun tanning, or not even then because they want to get a “healthy tan”.

There is no such thing as healthy tanned skin. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the USA, with more than 3.5 million people diagnosed every year. In 2018, Norway reported 50.3 new skin cancer cases per 100,000 population, the highest incidence across Europe.

This article is created with the hope of helping you understand how important using SPF daily is, how to find the best one for you and to bust sunscreen Myths.

Most Common Sunscreen Myths

Busting Sunscreen Myths - The Truth about SPF sunscreen

1. MYTH - All sunscreens are the same

Sunscreens can be either Chemical or Mineral and most of the Korean sunscreens are Mineral. Those offer broad-spectrum protection in the form of titanium oxide, zinc oxide, or even both.

We have a full article about the difference between chemical and mineral sunscreens but in general, chemical sunscreen absorbs UV rays and changes them to heat absorbed by the skin, before releasing them. Mineral sunscreen deflects UV rays away from the skin.

Not all sunscreens are broad spectrum. That means some only have UVB protection mentioned as SPF- Sun Protection Factor. While UVA protection is stated by PA-Protection Grade of UVA.

2. MYTH- Sunlight doesn't penetrate through windows or clothes.

UVB – Burning rays are blocked by windows. However UVA – ageing rays are NOT. Sun exposure is responsible for up to 80% of premature ageing and skin cancer. Make sure to apply sunscreen with PA protection when spending time next to the window while working or travelling. Another difference between UVB and UVA is that UVA rays will penetrate clouds. A good rule to remember is that as long as there is light outside, there are UVA rays.

Regular fabric and clothing are not reliable sun protection. There are sun protecting clothes on the market with a UPF factor. A UPF of 30 to 49 offers very good protection, while UPF 50+ rates as excellent by the Skin Cancer Foundation.

3. MYTH - Higher SPF factor means significantly higher protection.

The basis of this myth is that the higher number = the same number of higher protection and that SPF 100 is more than triple the strength of SPF 30. Or that SPF 50 = to 50% protection. The fact is that SPF 30 will block 97% of the UVB rays with a sufficient amount applied. All higher SPF will block about 1-2 more % of UVB rays and no sunscreen will be 100% protective. It also needs to be reapplied approximately every 2 hours.

The recommended daily factor for UVB protection is SPF30+ and PA+++ for UVA protection.

4. MYTH- Daily use of Sunscreen will make you Vitamin D deficient

“Studies have never found a link between everyday use of sunscreen and vitamin D insufficiency,” an article published by the Skin Cancer Foundation states. Your body needs very little of UVB exposure to produce Vitamin D, which helps to regulate calcium and nutrients needed to keep your body healthy.

As mentioned previously, all sunscreen will let at least 1-2% of UV rays penetrate, which showed to be sufficient for Vitamin D production in the human body.

5. MYTH- Using makeup products with SPF is enough

When using regular sunscreen you need approximately 1 tablespoon or 3 fingers covered in sunscreen. This is recommended amount for your face, neck and ears. When relying on SPF in makeup, you will probably not be able to apply enough of the product to give you full protection. Also, most of the makeup products only have about SPF15, which will not protect your skin. Think of a makeup product with SPF as a great addition and the next step in your sun protection rather than the only source.

TIPS to find the best sunscreen for you and to stay safe

Look for mineral-based sunscreens: These contain zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide as active ingredients. Mineral-based sunscreens are less likely to irritate sensitive skin as well.

Look for a broad spectrum SPF 30+ for UVB protection against burning rays and PA +++ for UVA protection against ageing rays.

Look for water-resistant products: They can’t be 100% waterproof but there are some better fitted for summer months when you are more likely to sweat or swim. you still need to reapply your sunscreen but you can rely on your sunscreen a bit more.

Give chance to mineral sunscreen. These contain ingredients such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These are also more suitable for sensitive skin and there is less chance of irritating your eyes. Korean sunscreens are currently one of the best on the market.

Remember that sunscreens are only a part of your sun protection. You need to seek shadow, wear protective clothing, a hat, sunglasses and be careful.  UV exposure for even as little as 15 minutes can damage your skin permanently and cause not only hyperpigmentation, wrinkles and premature ageing but skin cancer.

If you have any suspicious marks on your skin, contact your doctor ASAP!
