We used to share skincare advice through generations and friendships. Nowadays, with the magic of the internet, we can find skincare tips within seconds. The access to information is amazing, unfortunately, it comes at the price of fast-spreading myths and misinformation including in the skincare world.

The key is to always follow verified dermatologists and experts, such as Dr Andrea Suarez, Dr Sam Ellis, Susan Yara or Hyram. And NO, 15-year-old YouTubers and TikTokers are not experts. Make sure the information you are receiving is based on studies and facts, not personal experience or guesses.

These are the 8 Most Common Skincare Myths I have encountered while working in the skincare industry. There is no shame if you believed in any of them. The importance is in educating yourself.

Drinking more water will make your skin look better

Drinking water is essential for the overall health of your body, including your skin. However, drinking more water than an adequate amount will not give you better skin. There is no data showing that more water equals healthier skin or less acne. Your body will filter out the excess water.

If you want to help your body work better and get healthier skin by drinking water, the best you can do is to opt for clear/mineral water rather than sugary drinks, since sugar is partly responsible for inflammation in our bodies.

Your skin can get used to products and then they stop working

If you find a product or ingredient that seems to work great from the beginning but then seems to be less effective it is not because the product stopped working. A certain ingredient can just do so much and when you reach the point when you don’t see further improvement it means you need a stronger ingredient or formulation. The product did what it could and got your skin to a certain point when by continuous use will stay the same – but it didn’t stop working.

Pores can open and close

No. Pores are not doors. Hot water does not open your pores and cold water will not close them. Hot water or steam is helpful for loosening up the build-up – but be very careful, very hot steam will damage your skin. Everyone has pores and the size of them is mostly based on your genetics and skin type. When your pores get clogged, they might appear bigger in size, due to all the dead skin and oil build-up. Use Salicylic Acid product to break down the oil and help you clean your pores.

You don't need to moisturize your face if you have oily skin

There is a difference between skin hydration and skin oil. Hydration refers to the water content in your skin, the oil is the sebum produced by your sebaceous glands. Oily skin has the biggest chance to become dehydrated, which can lead to more oil production and slower healing. Opt for creams that are oil-free, non-comedogenic and lightweight- such as gel creams.

You only need sunscreen when it's sunny and hot

It doesn’t matter if it is cloudy, snowing, or winter or what your skin type or skin pigmentation you need sunscreen every day. The only time you don’t need sunscreen is at night when the sun is not present. UVB rays (burning rays) are most active in summer but UVA rays (ageing rays) are present always during the day and they can penetrate clouds and windows. UVA rays are responsible for around 80% of premature ageing, hyperpigmentation and fine lines. Wear your sunscreen!

If you feel burning sensation it means the product is working

The burning sensation is your skin telling you something is wrong. Every skin has a different tolerance lever and by using products that are too strong, instead of getting better or faster results you might develop sensitive skin condition or in some cases even permanent damage or scarring. If your product is burning on your skin, opt for a lower concentration or apply the product after applying a cream or a lotion until your skin builds up a tolerance, which might take 2-3 weeks.

You can't get rid of dark spots or post-acne marks

You absolutely can. The first step is recognising the course of your dark spots and finding the best treatment for them. The less deep or lighter spots can be treated by Vitamin C serums as well as AHA exfoliants such as Lactic Acid or Glycolic Adic. When it comes to darker spots or even surface scarring there is an option to choose micro-needling or laser treatment, both done professionally at a salon. With any type of dark spots or scarring, Sun will make the worse, so use sunscreen every day, to prevent further damage.

Skin ageing is mostly genetic

Your skin pigment, skin type and skin problems are genetic, however, genetics is not the main factor when it comes to skin ageing. The environment where you live, your daily habits, nutrition and sun exposure play a way bigger role than genetics. Enrich your meals with a lot of anti-oxidants, do exercise at least a few times a week and stay away from direct sunlight and you will age like a fine wine.
