What are retinoids?

Retinoids are an umbrella term for all types of vitamin A. Retinol, Retinal, Retinoic Acid, Tretinoin and Isotretinoin are the most effective forms of retinoids.

Retinoids are used in skincare as an anti-ageing holy grail but were first introduced as a treatment for mild to severe acne. They work well for anti-ageing and acne by increasing skin cell turnover, promoting collagen production and improving skin elasticity.

These have a positive effect on all major skin concerns, including fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, post-acne marks, acne and clogged pores.

What to expect when starting with retinoids?

Depending on the strength, you might expect some dryness – especially around the eyes, nose and mouth; some irritation and redness and even temporary worsening of the acne – due to the skin’s faster cell turnover the pimples are “resurfacing” faster.

It is very important to start slowly and with a lower concentration to avoid these side effects. It is a very bad idea to start with high concentration and hope for faster results – with retinoids you need to focus on consistency and slowly increasing the strength of retinol.

When can I see the results when using retinoid?

Depending on your skin’s initial state and the retinoid strength, you can expect to see results no sooner than after 3 months of consistent use. Retinoids are amazing and multipurpose ingredients that should not miss in your night-time skincare routine, but they do require patience.

How to start using a retinoid product?

Retinol can be quite irritating at first – especially for sensitive skin types. You can follow this general guide and adjust it to how your skin will react:

  • First 3 weeks use Retinol 0.5% or Retinal 0.05% after using face cream max 3 times a week
  • Avoid areas around your eyes, nostrils and lips to avoid dryness and skin peeling
  • If not experiencing any issues use it before cream max 3 times a week for 2 weeks
  • After 5 weeks of “introducing” Retinol, you can increase it to more times per week
  • After 2 months you can try using it every night
  • After 3-4 months you can upgrade to Retinal 0,1%
  • After a year you can ask your doctor to prescribe you Tretinoin cream (start slowly – the strength jump is big)
  • Always use retinol at night!
  • Use SPF 30+ the next – Retinoids make your skin more sensitive to sun exposure!
  • Don’t use it if you have Rosacea or other skin condition – talk to your doctor!
